The Gaja “Ca’Marcanda Camarcanda” is a Bordeaux-style cellar red poured by the bottle at Grappa in Seattle’s Queen Anne neighborhood. It is the flagship wine of Gaja’s Ca’Marcanda estate in Bolgheri, Tuscany, and this 2018 bottling sits among the most coveted reds on our list. We pour it for the guest seeking a refined, age-worthy expression of one of Italy’s great coastal terroirs.
About the Winery
Gaja is among Italy’s most respected wine families. In 1996 Angelo Gaja purchased his second Tuscan property, Ca’Marcanda, in Castagneto Carducci within the Bolgheri zone. The name means “house of endless negotiations” in Piedmontese dialect, a nod to the lengthy talks to acquire the land. The estate is planted to Bordeaux varieties along with Syrah, and Camarcanda is its top wine.
Region & Grape
This wine comes from Bolgheri on the Tuscan coast, the region that gave rise to the Super Tuscan movement. Camarcanda is a Bordeaux-style blend built around Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc. Bolgheri’s maritime climate and gravelly soils favor these international varieties, yielding wines of both power and polish.
Tasting Notes
Expect a deep, polished red. The aromas lean toward ripe black fruit, cassis and dark plum, with notes of cedar, tobacco, sweet spice, and fine oak. The palate is full and supple, with concentrated fruit and velvety, well-knit tannins. The finish is long and refined. This is a wine made to reward time in the cellar.
What to Pair It With
A Bordeaux-style blend of this caliber loves rich, savory dishes. Try it with our American Wagyu Steaks, the Lasagna, or the Pappardelle Bolognese. Explore the full dine-in menu for more options.
