Masi “Campofiorin” Rosso Verona is a rich, appassimento-influenced red wine poured at Grappa in Seattle’s Queen Anne neighborhood. Made by Masi, one of Verona’s most celebrated houses, it is the wine that pioneered the modern ripasso style. We pour it because it delivers the depth and warmth of a Valpolicella with remarkable polish and value, a crowd-pleasing red that suits hearty Italian cooking.
About the Winery
Masi is a historic Veronese producer renowned for championing the appassimento method, in which grapes are dried before or during winemaking to concentrate flavor. The 1964 vintage of Campofiorin marked a turning point: it was the origin of the ripasso category and a new style of Veronese red. Masi has continued to refine the wine across every vintage since.
Region & Grape
This is a Rosso del Veronese from the hills around Verona in the Veneto. It is built on the classic Valpolicella grapes, led by Corvina with Rondinella and Molinara. The wine is first vinified as a fresh red, then enriched through a second fermentation on the skins of partially dried grapes used for Amarone, before refining in oak. The vintage we pour is 2021.
Tasting Notes
Expect an intense ruby color and a bouquet of red fruits, morello and black cherry, and sweet spice. The palate is rich, round, and velvety, with soft, refined tannins and a warm, satisfying finish. It carries some of the dried-fruit depth of Amarone in a more approachable, everyday frame.
