Lagavulin 16 Year is a deeply peated Islay single malt, and it is poured at Grappa in Seattle’s Queen Anne neighborhood. It is one of the great smoky whiskies of Scotland, a benchmark for the Islay style, and we keep it on the list for guests who love a bold, maritime, peat-driven pour after dinner.
About the Distillery
Lagavulin sits on the southern shore of the Isle of Islay, established in 1816 among the peat bogs and sea lochs that define the island. The distillery is known for its slow fermentation, slow distillation and long maturation, the patient methods that build the richness and depth for which Lagavulin is famous. The 16 Year is its flagship, an age-stated expression that has long set the standard for Islay single malt.
Style & Region
This is a classic Islay single malt, deeply peated and unmistakably maritime, matured largely in ex-bourbon American oak with a measure of ex-sherry European oak. The Islay peat gives smoke, iodine and seaweed; the sherry casks add a sweet, fruity counterpoint that balances the intensity. Region and peat are everything here: this is whisky shaped by the island itself.
Tasting Notes
Expect a big, concentrated nose of peat smoke, iodine, sweet spice and mature sherry over creamy vanilla. The palate is rich and powerful, with salted caramel and butterscotch up front, then earthy peat, seaweed and a maritime salinity, rounded by dried dates and plums. The finish is long, smoky and warming, the peat lingering beautifully alongside sweet sherry.
What to Pair It With
As a peated malt, Lagavulin is superb with our briny Fresh Oysters, smoke meeting the sea, and with the char of our Spaniard Octopus. It also stands up to the marbled depth of our American Wagyu Steaks and the cured richness of our Charcuterie Board. Browse the full dine-in menu to build your evening.
