Maker’s Mark 46 is a French-oak-finished wheated bourbon poured at Grappa, the Mediterranean restaurant in Seattle’s Queen Anne neighborhood. Distilled in Loretto, Kentucky, it builds on the familiar softness of classic Maker’s Mark with added depth and spice, and we keep it on the list for guests seeking a richer, more layered pour to savor over dinner on Boston Street.
About the Distillery
Maker’s Mark 46 is produced at the Maker’s Mark distillery in Loretto, Kentucky, a National Historic Landmark founded by the Samuels family in the 1950s. The 46 expression was created to amplify the qualities the distillery loves most in its bourbon, and it was the brand’s first major new release in decades. Like its sibling, it carries the hand-dipped red wax seal.
Style & Mash Bill
Maker’s Mark 46 begins as fully matured wheated bourbon, using soft red winter wheat in place of rye alongside corn and malted barley. After aging, seared virgin French oak staves are inserted into the barrel for an additional finishing period in the cellar. This wood-stave finish deepens the whisky, adding spice and complexity while keeping the gentle, rounded heart of a wheated bourbon.
Tasting Notes
The nose offers vanilla, caramel and toasted oak with hints of warm spice. The palate is fuller and more layered than classic Maker’s, with caramel sweetness giving way to baking spice, dark fruit and a seam of toasted, almost smoky oak. The finish is long and gently spiced, lingering with vanilla and wood.
What to Pair It With
