Montepeloso A Quo Super Tuscan
Montepeloso A Quo Super Tuscan

Montepeloso A Quo is the super-Tuscan red poured by the glass and by the bottle at Grappa in Seattle’s Queen Anne neighborhood. It comes from the Montepeloso estate in the hills of Suvereto, on the Tuscan coast near Bolgheri, where winemaker Fabio Chiarelotto crafts a small range of wines built around native Italian grapes. A Quo is his most approachable bottling — a Sangiovese- and Cabernet-driven blend that captures the warmth of coastal Tuscany — which makes it a natural fit for Grappa’s Italian-focused list and an easy wine to share over dinner.

About the Winery

Montepeloso is a small estate of roughly 15 acres tucked into the hills of Suvereto, one of the warmest corners of Tuscany’s Maremma coast. Fabio Chiarelotto took charge in the late 1990s and rebuilt the vineyards from the ground up — retraining, replanting, and regrafting vines to raise quality. His guiding belief is that elegance is harder to achieve than sheer power in such a hot climate, so he works gently in the cellar with short macerations, fermentation using native yeasts, and bottling without filtration.

Region & Grape

A Quo is an IGT Toscana Rosso first produced in 2008 as the estate’s entry-level wine. It is a blend led by classic Tuscan and Mediterranean varieties — Sangiovese together with Cabernet Sauvignon and other native grapes — with the exact proportions shifting from vintage to vintage. Grappa pours the 2023. The Suvereto hills give the wine its ripe, sun-warmed character, while the estate’s restrained winemaking keeps it fresh and balanced.

Tasting Notes

Expect a medium- to full-bodied red with dark berry and plum fruit, a savory edge of Mediterranean herbs, and gentle notes of tobacco and spice from time in barrel. The tannins are supple and the acidity stays lively, carrying the wine to a long, dry finish. It is bold enough to stand up to red meat yet polished enough to enjoy on its own.

What to Pair It With

This is a wine made for Grappa’s heartier plates. It is a classic match for our American Wagyu Steaks, the Pappardelle Bolognese with its lamb and beef ragù, or the Roasted Lemon Chicken. Browse the full dine-in menu for more pairing ideas.

How It’s Served at Grappa

Montepeloso A Quo is offered both by the glass at $20 and by the bottle at $80, so you can enjoy a single pour or share a bottle across the table.
