Plantation Barbados 5 Year is a graceful aged rum that shows off the house’s signature two-stage maturation. Golden in the glass and gently rounded, it is the kind of rum that sips happily on its own yet still has the poise for a cocktail. At Grappa, we are pleased to pour it in our Queen Anne dining room in Seattle.
About the Distillery
Plantation is the rum label of Maison Ferrand, the French house celebrated for cognac and for its mastery of blending and barrel finishing. The Barbados 5 Year carries the brand’s defining technique: the rum is first matured in the tropics, then shipped to France to finish its aging in the house’s cognac cellars. That dual-climate journey is the heart of the Plantation style.
Style & Production
This is a molasses-based rum from Barbados, an island known for elegant, well-balanced rum. It is aged for five years in the Caribbean in bourbon barrels, then given a second maturation in France in former cognac casks, a process the house calls double aging. As the name states, the rum carries a 5 year age, and the French finishing rounds it with the soft, sweet influence of cognac wood. The two stages of oak give it depth and polish without heaviness.
Tasting Notes
The nose offers vanilla, caramel, and toasted oak, with a gentle backdrop of dried fruit and warm spice. The palate is smooth and mellow, layering banana, candied orange, and a touch of coconut over soft wood. The finish is warm, lightly sweet, and long, with the cognac-cask polish lingering nicely.
What to Pair It With
Its caramel and dried-fruit warmth pairs beautifully with our Flourless Chocolate Cake and the creamy depth of Mama’s Tiramisu. It also stands up to a hearty Charcuterie Board. See the full dine-in menu for more pairings.
