Puni Italian Gold is a single malt whisky from Puni, Italy’s first malt whisky distillery, and it is poured at Grappa in Seattle’s Queen Anne neighborhood. We are proud to keep an Italian single malt on the list at a Mediterranean restaurant: Gold is the house style of the distillery, a bright, refined expression that captures the alpine character of South Tyrol in the glass.
About the Distillery
Puni was founded by the Ebensperger family in Glorenza, in the Val Venosta of Alto Adige, in the far north of Italy. It is the country’s pioneering single malt distillery, drawing its name from the Puni river that flows through the valley. Maturation takes place in the dry, alpine climate of South Tyrol, where warm summers and freezing winters work the spirit through the wood, lending a depth and complexity that belies its youth. Gold is the expression the family chose to define their style.
Style & Region
This is an Italian single malt from the alpine reaches of Alto Adige, matured in first-fill ex-bourbon casks. There is no peat here; the focus is on clean malt and the vanilla, baking-spice and gentle sweetness that first-fill bourbon wood imparts. The cool mountain cellars give the whisky an elegant, polished profile that sets it apart from its Scottish and Japanese cousins.
Tasting Notes
Expect a fragrant nose of vanilla, ripe mango and orchard fruit, lifted by a light dusting of pepper. The palate is bright and supple, with creamy vanilla, soft tropical fruit and malt sweetness framed by a touch of spice. The finish is clean, warm and elegant, leaving an impression of polish rather than weight, a whisky that wears its alpine origins gracefully.
What to Pair It With
The bright fruit and gentle spice of the Gold sit beautifully alongside our Charcuterie Board, where vanilla and malt meet cured meats and cheese, or our Flourless Chocolate Cake for a fruit-and-cocoa finish to the evening. It is also lovely with the marbled richness of our American Wagyu Steaks. Browse the full dine-in menu to build your evening.
